That'll work, always. It's the best out of all three, since the symlink
will remain the same.
You might be interested in straight.el[0], a package manager for Emacs
that works by pointing directly to source control repositories. With
straight.el, you'd "install" rec-mode by providing it with the git clone
address, the end result being the same as installing them via git and
adding the path to the load path. Also its manual is ridiculously
comprehensive.
