I can reproduce this on CentOS 8 stream using the system bash-4.4.20. I
cannot reproduce it using bash-4.4.23 that I built from the distribution.
This means that it's almost certainly fixed by bash-4.4 patch 22, which is
mirrored as readline-7.0 patch 5.
These patches are over four years old. There's no real excuse for vendors
not to apply them.
