Please try again with the address sanitizer in CFLAGS. Compiling readline with 
that is the key to detecting the memory allocation problems.

It's hard to see how, but I suppose it's possible.

More or less what I did, except I used the termcap library instead of
ncurses and I didn't bother with address sanitizer for configure.
