I'd like to see a couple of different implementations of this before
putting it into Readline proper (since it would require extensive
changes to binding and key sequence types). Bash has one, and it works
pretty well. You could use that as a basis for a separate implementation
that would help flesh out the idea and identify any limitations in the
current Readline support.
