parted and xfs, cant grow

Hello,

I'm using parted 1.8.6 with Fedora 8.  My system has a raid array with 
several partitions and a GPT label.  I have a large XFS data partition.  I 
would like to add a disk and grow the data partition, but I have two issues.

Parted doesn't allow me to grow the partition only.
Parted wont grow XFS.

I found the following thread from someone having a very similar issue 
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-parted/2006-04/msg00026.html.  Im not 
sure the patch mentioned in this message would still be valid against parted 
1.8.6.

I was wondering if there is any way in parted 1.8.6 to have it resize the 
xfs partition and leave the filesystem alone, and follow manually with 
xfs_growfs to glow the file system?

Or tell parted to grow the xfs partition while its online?

Or is it safe to rm a partition, then recreate it with the same start 
position and the new ending position, And again use xfs_growfs to grow the 
filesystem?

Any other options safe options other than backup, delete, recreate larger, 
and restore?
