Previous discussions of this idea concluded with "this is a good idea",
but no-one has implemented it yet. I think it should be very easy
to add this for PVs, using the userspace library LVM provides.
On a related note, I just found out about relaytool, which is useful for
making soft dependencies. i.e. "if libX isn't available, then support
for X will be disabled." It can be used to avoid the mess that exists
in libparted/fs_reiser. Pity it only support PPC and x86.
