None of the changes between 1.4.16 and 1.4.23 (the latest
stable release) should make a difference, from what I can tell.

Can you run "e2fsck -f " on it your file system?  Perhaps
it was just a minor on-disk corruption from something else.

Best to check the obvious, before doing a major investigation ;)
