Hi Thomas (and others)

Just observing this from the outside. How many systems are actually not "compatible" with the modern simple standard $libdir/pkgconfig ? If these are very few - could it make sense to try to detect these handfull systems and override the default just for them with a series of if statements?

I'll think about it -- I've about 50 different machines. The ones which
use the feature are apparently of little interest to you, so I won't
bother going into detail.
