with CentOS7, I have
ncurses 5.9.20130511
which is rather old (4 years). Offhand, I don't recognize the symptom.

line-numbers would help a lot...
You might get some insight by running the application with valgrind
(still no line-numbers, but some information can be gleaned from that,
e.g., null pointer, uninitialized variable, etc).
