I just rebuilt ncurses version 6.0-20170408 on my 11.4 system, configured with --enable-ext-colors and installed that, and then tried: $ TERM=xterm-256color python test_userscreen.py $ stty sane $ TERM=xterm-color python test_userscreen.py $ stty sane $ TERM=xterm-new python test_userscreen.py $ stty sane $
I noticed you tried xterm-256color instead of the suggested xterm+256color. They are different terminfo files. I apologize, as it may not make a difference in your case. Still, I feel your pain and want to help. Also, have you tried forgoing the Python curses module and confirming the problem in C? There have been Python discrepancies in the past.
