One more finger pointing the problem being in XTerm:

As I mentioned, if I send "tput cvvis" to an xterm with a blinking
cursor (cursorBlink is true, or it was started with '-bc'), the cursor
STOPS blinking.

However if I then turn OFF cursorBlink via the menu, the cursor STARTS
blinking again.
