I'd start by checking the version of ncurses.  "tic -V" would show that.

The only thing that comes to mind is the workaround that I made with
NCURSES_NO_UTF8_ACS, and that is fairly old:

Centos (and RHEL) are usually fairly old as well.  However, I recall
that Centos5 and later should work with that.  (If I recall properly,
some Centos4's did, some did not - but it was in that era).

I do that all the time - installing into /usr/local (there are the usual
issues to unravel with regard to header search-paths, but the only
pitfall has been if I enable termcap support on Linux -- interferes
with lookups from terminfo).
