filter() prevents clearing of screen, but still clears current line

I've got another problem with my instring program. Using filter() I've 
managed to avoid clearing the entire screen. But ncurses still clears 
the current line. I want to prevent ncurses from doing that. Does that 
mean that I'll have to change the ncurses source? I could probably 
figure out how to do that, but if there's an easier way...
