pdcurses data retrieving

Hi,Im not sure if this is the right place for this but i downloaded pdcurses 
2.8 and it works fine but i've just spent the last 24hours trying to find 
out how to get the program scan its window for certain characters,is there 
any way of doing this?!
ie i would fill the screen with '#',is it even possible to go 
if(thescreen,7,7=='#'){dowhatever;}
  can the program take the state of the currnet window so i ciould do this 
or can it only accept input from the keyboard?!?!
