progress toward 5.6 release

I have further changes past Saturday, resolved the remaining
release-blockers on Sunday and marked a release.  Then I spent a couple
of days rebuilding all platforms.  At the moment, the only remaining
step is to get the tarball on ftp.gnu.org.  (They changed the procedure,
and I haven't gotten any response on that yet).

Normally when it's on ftp.gnu.org, I put the tarball and updated webpage
on my site as well.  However, if there's no response by Saturday, I'll
do that anyway (so I can continue, fixing minor issues, etc).
