        + modify configure --with-gpm option to allow it to accept a parameter,
          i.e., the name of the dynamic GPM library to load via dlopen()
          (requested by Bryan Henderson).
        + add configure option --with-valgrind (from vile).
        + modify configure script AC_TRY_RUN and AC_TRY_LINK checks to use
          'return' in preference to 'exit()'.
