Obviously, zsh will also work without gpm support in ncurses.
But what about mutt, for example?

mutt won't either.

Won't need gpm, or won't work without gpm? Do you know of any

Won't use gpm. mutt's developers decided that using a mouse was too hard
(read: slang and ncurses do it differently, no one else does mouse support).

programs that will break (as opposed to just being mouse-unaware)
without gpm support in ncurses?

That wasn't the issue. The problem that I was addressing was that without
using a dynamic interface, existing packages for gpm make it difficult
(often impossible) to use gpm without building one's own libraries.

Since it's possible to suppress the gpm interface, aside from annoying
a handful of packagers making static libraries, the gain here is by
getting the system ncurses able to use gpm. (And also it would shorten
my gpm faq ;-)
