Checking against the FreeBSD 5.3 I've installed on one of my boxes -
it works fine there.  I'm regarding it as a recent defect in FreeBSD.

Sadly, sysmouse support has never been that good - I recall the contempt 
with which my queries about were returned a few years ago - I'm inclined 
to just document it.
