How to get menu patterns to work?

Hi all,

I have a menu, but when I type letters, it does not search to the next pattern 
match. Typing letters produces no movement or any other type of response. I 
placed the following line before the call to post_menu(my_menu):

menu_opts_on(my_menu, O_SHOWMATCH);

I seem to remember getting pattern searches to work on a menu before. What 
have I forgotten?
