I have to get the tarball uploaded to ftp.gnu.org, and make some further
changes to my website, but this is the 5.4 release version. Enjoy.

20040124 5.4 release for upload to ftp.gnu.org
+ modify configure script check for ranlib to use AC_CHECK_TOOL, since
that works better for cross-compiling.
