I was using the libtool as provided from the portable pkgsrc packaging
system. (pkgsrc is commonly used and developed for NetBSD, but is useful
for a variety of other operating systems, like Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX,
Irix, Darwin OS, Mac OS X, other BSDs, etc.)

A BSD/OS porting guru from the bsdi-users mailing list gave me his libtool
1.4.2 with improved BSD/OS support. I was able to get the libncurses++.so*
files built when using --with-libtool.

The strange thing is that the pkgsrc-provided libtool works for making
libncurses++.so for other operating systems (at least for Linux and NetBSD
that I have tested).
