How recent?  I've done compiles on 4.8 and 5.1

I suppose so.  I seem to recall that when shared libraries were setup,
FreeBSD had no (usable) support for sonames.  That's been a while though.

Fortunately I can test this directly (and yes, it does seem to be broken).
