I am also a listmaster.  I agree.  When our mailing list closed to
subscribers only, we reduced the spam to nearly zero.

I get about 10 valid posts a week and 200 spam messages.  If we had
not limited submissions to subscribers the mailing list would be
useless.

The down side of closing the list is that some valid posts do not get
through.  These messages are usually from the clueless wanting
free advice.  Things like:
  Why do computers need disk drives?  Give three reasons.
or:
  Could somebody please tell me how to differentiate the protocols
  used on Ethernet?  I'm writing a driver and and don't understand
  all those packets.
or my favorite:
  Sorry about bad Englsh.  Plse to tell me kind make local bus?

If you would like to give up the job as listmaster I would take
on the job.  Surely there is some way we can solve this.
