notimeout

I can't get notimeout to work.

For example I tried adding some "notimeout(stdscr, TRUE)" in various
places to lxdialog code (linux menuconfig).  Also instead of stdscr, I
tried using the 'dialog' or 'menu' that wgetch was called with.
I had no success, always a delay when pressing escape.

Can someone point me to a vi clone that uses ncurses and notimeout to
get rid of the Escape delay?
Or give a a hint to what could make this call [not] work?
