Thanks for the instant fix.

There is another "problem" with ncurses 5.2:
If I interrupt my program by Ctrl-C the screen is
not fully reset: Sometimes the program's background color is
kept after program termination in some cases (~10 %). 
When linked against ncurses 4.2 (SuSE Linux 6.3) the screen 
is always fully reset.

BTW: What about xterm's color capabilities? The standard
     terminfo of 5.2 has no colors for xterm.
