it is looking for the terminfo database, e.g., (the exact path depends
on how it was configured)
        /usr/local/share/terminfo
Perhaps the porter for the 'public beta' installed terminfo under some
other directory.  (If I had only binaries to inspect, I would do a
"strings" on libncurses and look for "/terminfo").
