not to be overly pedantic, but the cygwin release itself is not sufficient to
do software development (there's no text editor -- except in the "contributed"
area, which reminds me that not all of the "contributed" programs rated that
particular adjective, since the authors didn't have much to do with that
process specifically for cygwin).  

my point being, that since the "contributed" programs are needed to do useful
work (or find replacements), the typical user on the net reporting problems
doesn't tend to make the fine distinction regarding the part of the cdrom
they got the program from.
