Can you specify exactly what you downloaded, and exactly what you
typed to elicit this output?

It sounds like you're trying to start with mit-scheme-c and then do a
cross-build to get a native i386 Scheme.  If so, why?  Note that the
mit-scheme-c-9.1.1.tar.gz distribution is just as much a pre-built
binary as the mit-scheme-9.1.1-i386.tar.gz distribution -- we just use
C as a portable `machine code'.
