   I file lots of stuff to old rmail files, and seeing the old
   'recent' flags there is a bit of a nuisance.

Discarding the flag when saving a folder means that if you file a
recent message into a folder, the message will remain recent until you
next save the folder, which might not be for ten years.

Discarding the flag when filing a message (i.e., leaving it set in the
original message, but excluding it from the filed message) means that
some information is lost by filing, which IMAIL tries not to do (hence
the X-IMAIL-INTERNAL-TIME and X-IMAIL-FLAGS headers that it inserts).
It also means that the messages in your old rmail files will retain
their `recent' flags until you explicitly remove them, or refile the
messages into other folders.  Of course, IMAIL can't retain the
information anyway when filing a message to an IMAP folder, because of
the IMAP's special treatment of the `recent' flag, so this is the
existing behaviour when filing a message to an IMAP folder.
