    Julie, all of these rmail files are in your home directory at
    csail, right?  If so, then they're stored in AFS.

Yes. they are in this directory (folder):
file:/afs/csail.mit.edu/u/j/jems/messages

I renamed the bad file to be trips.msgs.truncated
and the ~ file (trips.msgs~) to be trips.msgs.good
As you can see, about half of the file was gone! 

  -rw-rw-r-- 1 jems jems 3261270 May 14 00:31 trips.msgs.good
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 jems jems 1450643 May 28 23:02 trips.msgs.truncated

Unfortunately, the truncated size is not a multiple of 4096.
