I agree. It took me a while to understand some of the GNU Make extensions a
few years ago. I think the warnings would have helped me.

special tricks but I'm not a fan of this approach.
Sounds like it would be a pain to maintain. Paul Eggert said the "$ " trick
was just for Emacs.
It was changed to your "$." trick yesterday and seems to be working fine so
far.
