Ok - try a build without guile:

balay@ypro make-4.4.1 % ./configure --without-guile && make -j8

Now it works! :

balay@ypro ~ % ./make-4.4.1/make
CONFIGDIR: /Users/balay/testdir/share/config
balay@ypro ~ % 


So there must be some bad interaction with picking up brew installed guile libs 
here...
