I've just downloaded the CVS version of source, after which I

aclocal ;# this gives errors about AC_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION
             # so I comment this macro out of operation.
aclocal
automake --add-missing --copy
autoconf
mkdir bld
cd bld
../configure --prefix=/myprefix ;# This results in: config.status:
error: cannot find input file: po/Makefile.in.in

$ autoconf --version
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.53
