IMPORTANT erratum / omission in my previous posting:

Oiii! Sorry. Even this brief report is misleading (I was overtired). I
have to add the important omission that I used **patched source** to
build rc1 -- the patch I applied before attempting to build was posted
to this List in:
Message-ID: <address@hidden>
From: Philip Guenther <address@hidden>
Subject: Patch for 3.80rc1, [was: GNU make 3.80 rc1]
Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 22:53:45 -0700
Thanks, Mr. Guenther, for the patch. Sorry all for making a report that
might cause someone implementing it some lost time.
Naturally, I suggest attempting to evaluate a Cygwin build of `make'
using a newer pre-release ('rc2') which I have read that Paul Smith
expects to be making rather soon, or using source acquired via cvs.
I'll be making a rather more detailed report later.
