Here is some additional information on the problem. The version used was:
GNU Make version 3.79.1, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
Built for hppa1.1-hp-hpux11.00
The problem with $? does not appear when using the -n option to view which
commands will execute.
This may be related to a problem posted by Eilert Viet
