Well, it goes without saying that the manual leaves an awful lot to
be desired, but it does cover that particular topic.  Here are some
pointers:

The configuration file syntax is described in subsection 2.4.5
"Scripting" (the node name is perhaps misleading).

2.4.7 "Personal and System-wide Configuration Files".
