Have you tried to contact MH-E developers? This one seems to be rather
an MH-E problem. Anyways, can you give me a recipe on how to reproduce
it?

What version of MH-E are you using? This particular bug was
fixed in v. 7.4.2, as per the ChangeLog:

2003-08-19  Bill Wohler  <address@hidden>

        * mh-e.el (mh-folder-size, mh-folder-size-folder)
        (mh-folder-size-flist): If flist is not present use
        folder to find the number of messages in the folder. 

The `flist' utility is optional (actually, it is nmh-specific), neither
traditional MH nor Mailutils MH implementations provide it.
