I seem to have sufficient privileges to access the mailbox, and using vi I can 
also delete messages (although it's not my preferred way to do so):

What permissions do I need to check exactly? Is the mbox file sufficient? Are 
there lock files needed? What else is going on in mailutils?

I used
mail        (interactively, without parameters)
pop3d -i       (in xinetd)
imap4d -i      (in xinetd)

I did not modify any config files regarding those programs, if they exist.
