thank you.  After applying the patch referred to in the message URL  
above, the build failed with the same error.   Then I used the CVS  
version as well and the same failure.   OS X 10.4.10 and configure  
options are
--sysconfdir=/etc --without-readline --enable-mh-utils
make returns:
