Heh, yeah, I thought about it after posting. I mean, if Mailutils
started to use a GNOME/Linux-like version numbering, it might make
sense. GNOME releases (2.6 -> 2.8) take place every 6 months, but GTK
release can take a lot more time, so it might make sense.

The "and" rule is what I was thinking about for mailutils.
