Okay, thanks.  Reading over the RFC 1939 to explain to someone what the
problem was, I found this in the first paragraph of section 4 (The
AUTHORIZATION State):

The POP3 session now enters the TRANSACTION state, with no messages
marked as deleted.

Should the pop3 perhaps iterate over the messages and make sure that any
marked as deleted in the mailbox are then so unmarked as we move into
the transaction state?
