Ok, the first problem are empty lines in .mailrc Here, a test
with empty mbox:

  $ echo > .mailrc

  $ mail
  1: invalid message number
  mail (GNU Mailutils 0.1.2), Copyright (C) 2001 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
  mail is free software with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
  For details type `warranty'.
  Send bug reports to <address@hidden>.
  No mail for te

Then, with one message in mbox and "set autoprint" in .mailrc:

  $ mail
  mail (GNU Mailutils 0.1.2), Copyright (C) 2001 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
  mail is free software with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
  For details type `warranty'.
  Send bug reports to <address@hidden>.
  "/var/mail/te": 1 messages 1 new
