You have a $user.lock file lying around.  Maybe du to
an old session of pop3d that died unexpectedly or you
were having a few sessions at the same time.

Pop3d will refuse to continue if cannot create the lock file.
Assuming you had all the rigth permission for pop3d to create the file.
