.lock file hanging around

RedHat 7.0, gnu-pop3d version 0.9.8.

I have a scenario where a remote pop3 user loses his dial up connection in 
the midst of receiving mail, and from then on cannot retrieve mail until I 
manually delete the .lock file for him.  Things work until his connection 
gets dropped, and then I have to delete the .lock file again.

Any suggestions on how to combat this behavior?
