I think I have a hint what probably happened.  Do you build $srcdir !=
$builddir?  When the switch to libtool objects happened, you may have
still had some object files lying around from the old compliation (the
Makefiles no longer knew about libmailutils.a and *.o in lib/, for
example.)

I almost always use a separate builddir, so I wouldn't have seen the
problem.
