We are still talking about a mail client that retrieves messages from
a POP3 server. Although, according to the RFC, pop3 servers are required
to have an exclusive lock to the mailbox while the session is on(the mail
client is connected and properly authenticated) Some other pop3 servers
use other techniques to circumvent this. For example, Qalcomm POP3 servers
copy the entire mailbox in to a new location (like /var/mail/user.pop),
the work is done on the __copy__ of the mailbox, so there is no need
to hold on to the exclusive lock.

Some other Pop3 servers do not need to do this at all because of the format
of the mailbox, for example if you use maildir or mh formats where it is
one message one file, the drastic locking is not required.

The exclusive locking is done especially for Unix mail format(MBOX) where
all messages are save in one file separated by a the string "From ...".
The pop3 server needs, in this case exclusive access to the mailbox, to avoid
havoc and having more then one process working on the file.
There is not much the mail client can do, all the (file)locking is done by
the servers.

No, I have never worked with Netscape Messaging Servers and have no
idea how they implement there internal locking or how they store(format)
the messages.

Maybe someone on the list as experience with this
