Sean pointed out the following:
Making all in mail
make[3]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/mailutils-001228/mail'
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -I../include -I../lib -Wall -pedantic -g
-DTESTING -c alias.c
In file included from alias.c:18:
mail.h:37: readline/readline.h: No such file or directory
mail.h:38: readline/history.h: No such file or directory
make[3]: *** [alias.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/mailutils-001228/mail'
Should 'mail' handle the case where readline isn't available, or should I
not build it when readline isn't available? I've never used readline, so
I don't have a good feel for how much work it is to provide a smooth
fallover.
