Did you look inside config.log, or consider attaching it to this message?
Although most Linux distributions come with gcc already installed, did
you check that you have a compiler installed and on your PATH? Which
distribution of Linux are you using? Would using a pre-compiled m4 from
your distribution be a wiser course of action, until you are more familiar
with Linux?
