That patch seems to correspond to some different source tree. There is
no gnu.c. I downloaded builtin.c from CVS instead.

WEXITSTATUS is defined in sys/wait.h as
#define WEXITSTATUS(st) ((st) >> 8)
but I think it's not intended to be used with system().
