Hello,

somebody already answered that I must have had installed an old, bundled 
version. I grabbed the newest from ftp.gnu.org (1.4.2, I think it was), and it 
still shows the same behaviour. There is something inconsistent in m4 
installation process...

P.s.: I solved the problem in my case, so there is no hurry from my side...
